It's not about "just" the land. It's the species of wildlife within it. We saw this coming when our forestry stewards were thrown out of jobs. This is greed of the very worst kind, and it will destroy our planet. This is one of many short-sighted, dangerous, deadly plots of those who think they are elite, and the common folk and their planet are here for their disposal.

Yes, it's always about greed! And the greed only benefits the robber baron rich guys; it always takes something away from ordinary Americans. Our public lands belong to all Americans! That is OUR heritage.

What can citizens do? Writing our senators and representatives doesn’t help!

It’s terribly sad. Those lands are precious and worth protecting from the greedy who will only destroy the land and the flora and fauna that thrive only there.

Beware of short term thinking. Once the public lands are gone, they’re gone forever.

It's an abomination. Our public lands should not be for sale to the highest bidder

Thanks so much for this informative article. This is APPALLING. Our national parks are a TREASURE, open to anyone to enjoy the beauty that we are blessed to have in this country of ours. I will be contacting officials about this.

I don't understand how we've gotten from America's Best Idea to, "eh, do we really need this? Let's sell it." Also, talking about selling it to build housing makes me want to scream.

As soon as I saw the writer’s name my mind almost broke, because the obscenity of using a Black woman to carry this message was too cynical to contemplate. Upon verifying that truth, I plan to reach out to Ms Smith and share another side of our public lands, including maybe the stance of former leaders of the NPS who also happen to be Black Americans, in their recent letter to the administration. For 30 years we missed Ms Smith’s scholarship on public lands even as we strove to address the glaring lack of diversity in the space.

Writing and calling your Congressmen and Senators does matter even if it seems like it doesn't by their actions. If enough of us contact our Members of Congress, they will have to take our opinions on public lands into account just as they have to do for slashing Medicaid. The voter blow back was strong enough that they have caved on some issues recently and AOC has said that some Republicans are contemplating their Medicaid cuts vote. Please take a stand for pubic lands as not as many people recognize the importance of this issue. Go to 50501 for easy contact information of your MOC and brief but to the point scripts for information on many issues.

The Bloomberg article is paywalled, but appears to be evidence that it’s as much ignorance as greed. If you want another angle on what’s happening you should check out The Flying Over a Fantasy City edition of The Practice of Community.

Remember who first said to people, “Fight like hell, or you won’t have a country anymore”?

That guy.

He’s orchestrating the next level heist, stealing our land and natural resources. Held, until now, for future generations.

This is where our democratic wealthy friends can help…saving our land, parks and national history as well as creating a rich and lasting legacy to remember them by…have them help with donations that they contribute to, along with us, average citizens…IT IS OUR LAND AND NO ONE ELSE.
