This is such a wonderful piece about solitude in nature. I love to really listen and hear all the sounds that speak to me and fill my soul and spirit with joy!
I love going on my solo walks, bike rides. It's so peaceful and essential. The world is too noisy, I prefer the sound of the wind through the trees, water running through the brooks and birdsong. It always baffles me when people go out in nature with headphones on. Don't you want to hear the natural world?
I live in a rural area, back down in a wooded area, the dogs get waked 4 times a day, I never have earbuds in! Just tune into nature, listen to the birds and relax!!
We have an Osprey pole, been. 3 years and FINALLY a pair have taken up residence...we can’t see if they ha$ chicks...I think they would be visible by now...but it is a treat to her them,, and know they will be back! We know they are young, so maybe next year.???
Solitude in nature is what keeps me sane in this world. It’s what has enabled me to get through two years as a grieving parent.
I love how your writing connects the urgency of protecting our public lands to the value that quiet natural places provide to us as individuals. People are more likely to protect what they personally need and love.
Yes! The Coolidge quote “Nature is your great restorer,” lives on for all us nature lovers to draw on.
I recently encountered & accepted the grace of nature’s gift on lovely and remote Cortes Island, BC as I was grappling with the moral harm being thrown at us and our lands on a daily basis this spring of 2025, by the current ruling regime. It was a blessing and will aid me going forward. 🌲
I've been in a fewplaces where there weren't any people in ten mile radius but such places are getting harder to find. Basically desert country in the lower forty eight during high summer or winter.. snow closes a lot of places to easy traffic. The continent is getting populated and a significant fraction enjoy being in the outdoors and a significant fraction of that group like to escape the crowds. But you can do it still. In YNP which I know perhaps as well as anyone who doesn't live there, you can still find trails where five miles from the trailhead you're pretty much on your own, and if you go off trail and bushwhack the ridges you can find places where maybe no one has been since the last ice age. But no true solitude anywhere anymore. The jet planes leaving their contrails fly overhead. The satellites monitoring the climate with their cameras look down. It's truly hard to absolutely escape humanity in the Anthropocene. But it's relatively possible., and then what an experience! For those of us fortunate to live in the western states, SE Oregon is an excellent place.
That’s the sad part you cleanse yourself and then you have to deal with the toxicity. I guess this is supposed to help us deal with this crap called politics and religion.
We go to our special place. It’s wonderful then reality sets in.
Every Saturday I go on a hike. It's my time to recharge and reset. I value this precious time, and it is absolutely vital to my mental health!
Such a great routine. It does so much for you.

Thank you Karen! There’s so much to gain by soaking in the beauty of nature in its many facets
You’re welcome!
You’re welcome!
We will protect our parks with everything we have. 🌳

Thanks Tina. It’s such a powerful thing. I wish more people understood what it can do for you and had easy access to it.

It really can do so much good, even in the most trying times. Thanks for reading and sharing Monet
Steve Schmidt of ‘The Warning’ specifically mentioned yesterday the land heist. He, too is incensed and very aware.
May we always have wild lands where we can retreat for healing solace when we want to.
