"This wasn’t about saving money. It was about destroying belief in the idea that government can do good, that service can matter, that young people can change the world without a profit motive."
This is Mr. Vought's goal. One wonders what sort of motivations spur the replacements. Grift? Rude ambition? Or, as in Vought's case, Christo fascist control?
I’ve always called AmeriCorps NCCC America’s best-kept secret. It was, without a doubt, one of the most impactful programs ever created by the federal government—not just for the communities it served, but for those of us who served in it.
I joined after graduating college, and to this day, I credit NCCC for some of the most essential life skills I learned—skills our education system somehow missed. I wasn’t taught how to write a check in school, but I learned it as a FEMA Corps Team Leader, guiding others while learning myself.
Most people don’t realize that NCCC's roots trace back to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of the New Deal era. The legislation that once helped rebuild America after the Great Depression is the same one that funded NCCC, which was later folded into AmeriCorps under the Clinton administration.
The termination of AmeriCorps NCCC is more than just the end of a service program—it’s the erasure of a vital legacy woven into our nation’s history. And that, to me, is completely unacceptable.
You are right, for AmeriCorp people it was “life-changing. For the communities they served, it was often lifesaving.” Teaching leadership skills and positive values through hard work in public service is always an excellent investment.
Thank your kids for me for their service. This country has become unrecognizable in many ways. We used to be the shining city on the hill, now look at us, tearing down everything that made us the envy of the world.
Well said! Trump is a sadistic billionaire who ran for reelection for two reasons and two reasons only. The first was to avoid prison. The second was to exact vengeance on all of his enemies. What he has discovered along the way, however, was that vengeance was so much fun that the more people he could make suffer the better he felt. Trump is the antithesis of the concept of public service. He is public pain. From attacking our friends to assaulting our freedoms to eviscerating our savings to destroying our public institutions, welcome to Trumpland. The only question that remains is just how much more of this the American people wish to endure. As for the Trumpanzees, they’re a lost cause. What about the rest of us? It’s time to let our elected representatives know just how we feel. It’s time to make them feel our pain and anger.
Ball is in our court now to continue to teach what we have learned and empower our communities by leading with example. Biggeta hurdle for humans on the wheel is making the time to care for our environment. It won't be NCCC, but we can still do the damn thing. Stay organized, my friends. Ty for the eyes on this, Jim.
I hate what he’s doing to our country on so many levels. I anguish over the current situation daily. We can only hope that Congress grows a pair and gets rid of the dictator.
36 Trillion in National Debt (over 100K per each citizen) is hardly a "tired excuse." However, I do agree that neither this administration (nor the alternative) really cares about reducing the deficit and getting our country back on track financially.
One side is going around axing small dollar (in proportion to spending and GDP) helpful organizations like this, while the other side answers near every question with "tax the rich" while being blind to the fact that the top 1% already pays 45% of cumulative federal income taxes.
One side is saying "let's cut down all the trees", while the alternative is saying "look at me with my electric car" as they plug it into the dirty grid instead of solar.
One side says "Clean Air, Clean Water, Clean Dirt", while the alternative says "Let's get rid of all the US Pollution" (which is only around 5% of the world total) while both are ordering China made junk where there isn't hardly any climate controls or emissions (and also working conditions and emissions in EV battery production), not to mention what is produced in getting it shipped overseas.
It's as if we are walking into a store on Christmas, buying stuff we should have already bought ahead of time, and then telling the cashier "I'm so sorry you're having to work today."
^As an aside, I don't really think I fit into either camp and would make everyone mad, as I believe both right wing and left wing is just two sides of the same bird that is way bigger and more powerful than the Founding Fathers ever intended.
In the state of all of this political disruption, it would be nice if we could get more content (in general, not from MTJP in particular) on simple living, self sufficiency, and doing what we personally can for our trails, parks, and environment. (leave no trace, composting, backyard chickens, rabbits, and gardens, trail cleanup etc.)
PS: Have y'all heard any update on where the push for the Ocmulgee Mounds being named a National Park is at?? What all political red tape/swamp needs to be cut through for it to happen?
I'm going to choose to sidestep all the false equivalency baked into that comment. I appreciate your engagement though and I can agree that neither party seems to have good leadership.
On Ocmulgee, yes, the redesignation effort is still active and has been brought forth again. There’s broad local and bipartisan support, but the bottleneck is in Congress. I do believe it'll get done this year though, depending on some other big bills that have to be moved.
Thank you for speaking up about NCCC!
Thanks for your service! You and everyone else involved deserved so much better than this.
Despairing here in Missouri. Thank you for keeping us informed and speaking truth to power.

A grotesque act, indeed. Thank you for speaking up and out!

Both of my daughters and my son-in-law worked for Americorps. If there’s anything good or worthwhile, Drumph will destroy it.

FYI, I was referring to Elon Musk…

Ugh! Enough already. 💔
