I've mentioned before that my husband ran HotShot crews for the USFS and fought wildland fire for 43 years and was proud to serve our public lands and the people that enjoy and appreciate them.

What is happening now it's just an absolute gut punch.

No one ever said or believed any federal agency was without fault, but for the most part, everyone wanted to preserve and maintain our public lands for future generations.

Keep fighting the good fight. We are all in this together.

We need your voices, thank you for staying in the battle.

Thanks a lot. We're in to the end. I wish more people in the public lands space would wake up to the crisis we're in and be willing to meet the moment instead of calling out others for being in the arena.

Furblong21's avatar

We have the same problem in all the arenas. If only we could get everyone to see what is happening and then agree a united front is the only way to changing our future.

Jim Pattiz's avatar

You're absolutely right. It's a problem across the board. The FDR quote really nailed it. A shockingly large part of the opposition to this administration keeps insisting on bringing talking points to knife fights and then wonders why they keep losing. We're in the fight of our lives here. We can't afford this kind of nonsense.

You are doing almighty work! I'm with you and am keeping my focus on the ecologically true reality of life everlasting on Earth. The present moment is all that we really have and I hope that the pen is mightier than the chainsaw

Jim Pattiz's avatar

Well said Linda! And thanks for your support. We'll keep fighting for our public lands. There's just too much at stake.

When you get push back remember the quote from Upton Sinclair:

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it."

A great quote.

I don't know about anyone else, but I recognized a few of the critics you pointed out pretty quickly! I had already unsubscribed from one a while ago and was really disappointed in the other when he felt the need to weigh in this week. As you guys pointed out, his criticisms didn't even make any sense. Regardless, glad to see you're undeterred! We desperately need this kind of unflinching reporting today.

Jim Pattiz's avatar

Thanks Henry. It's a shame we have to field attacks from our flank while we're trying to keep up with this administration, but I suppose feathers were always going to be ruffled.

I too immediately recognized who you were alluding to. I was aghast at the words of condescension from writers I once respected… not so much any more!!! Keep up the great efforts to educate!

Please keep doing what you are doing. There are people who care and believe in you! I have started a group in Illinois called Friends of the Forest to get the word out. Our particular plan of attack is to personally write media outlets that can potentially report on all of this. Think outside the box about media- for example: Bill Maher on HBO, Democracy NOW, Jon Stewart, etc...these are the people we need to realize what is going on. They care, but are inundated with everything else this administration is doing- we need to get their attention!!

Jim Pattiz's avatar

Thanks Patricia. We're not going anywhere and we're not moderating our coverage to make certain people feel more comfortable. Congrats on starting your group. You're being the change you want to see. Really commendable. Keep fighting!

Jane's avatar

Thank you for being there and for what you do. Agreed that we need to remember there are dedicated people in our public lands agencies that truly care and show it in what they do every day - it’s so hard to have to work against the grain every day and still hold to your values.

Jim Pattiz's avatar

Thanks Jane. And you are absolutely right. It makes me sick the way this administration has treated people who truly represent the best of us. And it's been really sad to see some in the public lands community dismiss their work and their dedication.

Speak brothers! I have always found your insights and the actions you encourage to be valuable. I don't know where I would get the real story without you. I don't like the gut punch but I just can't not know.

Jim Pattiz's avatar

Thanks Barbara! We're glad to have you with us in this fight.

Greetings. I've read and re-read your article and the comments. I believe you need to keep doing what you are doing, plus. We have all watched this administration take the most extreme actions possible and only it only changes course when extremely pressured by the people or courts. It knows no compromise. If you don't act first to bring attention to protentional issues they are accomplished before you get the chance to stop them. Think ballroom. If we allow those kinds of actions to occur in the public lands debate the lands would be gone, cut down, protections removed and others before we even know it's proposed. Think data centers. Much like your 70 worst actions of 2025, this discussion could go on and on. Keep doing what you're doing, everyone keep contacting your local, state and federal elected representatives until they know you buy name and tell them what is acceptable to you. Elections matter and they know if. Not sure when my renewal comes up but you can count on it. Cheers

"I promise that I can be free of judgement." he says, after saying "...often reads as if, well, if it's not written by AI, it's at least presented in the most confusing and fear mongering way..." But, sure...no "judgement!"

I'm 100% sure that the readers here are smart enough to find and understand the substance and be appropriately outraged and motivated.

Really well written, your advocacy is one of the many reasons I’m a proud subscriber.

Keep up the good work! Public lands lack coverage because of the dumpster fire of the government that is happening with all agencies. The states east of the Rockies are not public lands states and there is a total lack of awareness. Virtually all of the people that visit our public lands and come into visitor centers are totally unaware this is happening. Staff who have survived he purges can't tell them due to the Hatch Act and other obvious reasons (hint: staff are scared). More Than Just Parks is a way to make sure our public lands do not get totally lost in this disaster.

Cathy's avatar

I feel fortunate not to have encountered those purveyors of bullshit, not that I care what they have to say in the first place. Carry on with your good work.

Nilesh Thali's avatar

Wish you could list the names of the writers who are either saying it’s no big deal, or that it all works out. I have either not come across them or I’m too gullible to even notice.

Jim Pattiz's avatar

Probably safe to say you haven't come across them. If you read their work you'd definitely know exactly who was being referenced.

ARW's avatar

Sad that some people have nothing better to do than snipe at you for fighting so hard for our one and only planet.

Jim Pattiz's avatar

Ya it is. Much bigger fish to fry right now.
