A Sky Worth Fighting For

International Dark Sky Week starts today and yet most people alive today will never see the Milky Way.

More than 80 percent of the world’s population lives under skies polluted by artificial light. In the U.S. and Europe, it is over 99 percent.

The night sky is fading. And no one seems to be looking up.

What used to be a shared experience, the hush of darkness, the sweep of stars, the sense that we are small but part of something vast, has become a luxury. Something you have to travel to. Pay for. Schedule in advance.

But the sky was not meant to be exclusive.

It was meant to be a right.
